Visual Art gets a “Status Update”

Facebook. Twitter. Myspace. LinkedIn. Social networks have redefined how we communicate and interact with one another in this world where technology has taken over our identity. Through social networking sites, we tweet about our daily activities, upload photos of ourselves, and manage to update everyone about our thoughts and actions within 140 characters.  Remember when there wasn’t internet? Hard to conceive considering our lives are distinctly connected to the world and others by internet and social network sites nowadays.

In our attempt to capture this concept of the world becoming more digitalized and we ourselves creating our digital identity, the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent (CHAT) structured this year’s 10th Annual Hmong Arts & Music Festival around the theme of “Status Update”. Although inspired by social network sites, specifically Facebook, the theme is not meant to contrive individuals to shape their understanding of the festival by that alone. Instead, the theme is meant for individual and personal interpretation to include questions such as: Where you are right now? What are you doing? What do you want to share with the world?

In this day and age where people scramble for the latest technology and feel compel to update their status on the web, how do you connect to community, the world, and each other? More importantly, how you do artistically express yourself by incorporating this idea of “status update”? With this in mind, CHAT is now accepting artist submissions for the festival’s visual art gallery component. Submissions can be a variety of mediums from paintings to sculptures to photography.

In addition to the Visual Art Gallery tent where the submitted artwork will be display, a section has been designated for the Master’s Art Gallery. There will be a panel of three jurors who will then judge and select 5 artists to showcase their artwork in Master’s Art Gallery. The 5 selected artists will have an opportunity to have their artwork showcase in Spring 2012 at the Pioneer Press Gallery.

Artist Submissions deadline: August 1st, 2011 DEADLINE EXTENDED to August 10th!!!

The 10th Annual Hmong Arts & Music Festival will be held on Saturday, August 20th, 2011 at the Western Sculpture Park, Saint Paul, MN from 11:00am to 8:00pm.
